Genetics of behavior: selection for mating ability in chickens.

چکیده

MATING behavior in animals is complex and determined by diverse genetic and environmental factors. As one aspect of this behavior, mating frequency in chickens has received considerable attention ( UPP 1928; WOOD-GUSH 1956; MCDANIEL and CRAIG 1959; SIEGEL 1959; CARBAUGH, SCHEIN and HALE 1962; JUSTICE, MCDANIEL and CRAIG 1962). These reports, while not in agreement on the best procedures for the study of this component of sexual behavior, were consistent in showing that it was highly variable. Although phenotypic variation is large, data are available to suggest a genetic basis for mating frequency and sex-drive in chickens. For example, GUHL (1951 ) found significant differences among males for mating frequency. Differences have been noted among sire families (WOOD-GUSH and OSE~QRNE 1959) and inbred lines (SIEGEL 1959). A repeatability estimate of .31 was obtained by SIEGEL (1960a) for the number of completed matings made in 10-minute observation periods. Further, some progress in the separation of lines by selection for sex-drive has been reported by WOOD-GUSH (1958, 1960) and TINDELL and ARZE (1965). The present study was designed to measure the effects of mass selection in divergent directions for mating frequency at 31 to 34 weeks of age. Information was sought on the inheritance of this trait and its relationship with unselected characteristics.

Behavior Genetic Analyses in Chickens and Quail

Behavior-genetic analysis requries an interfacing of genetics and behavior. This may be accomplished by studying the genetic architecture of specific behaviors and by examining how behaviors influence selection and thereby modify the gene pools of subsequent generations. The behaviors emphasized in our research include those associated with reproduction, feeding and social strife. This morning'...

Estimation of Combining Ability and Gene Action for Agro-Morphological Characters of Rapeseed (Brassica Napus L.) Using Line×Tester Mating Design

Combining ability effects were estimated for different agronomic characters in line × tester crossing program comprising 21 hybrids produced by crossing 7 lines and 3 testers. Parents and hybrids differed significantly for general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects, respectively. The variance due to GCA and SCA showed that gene action was predominantly additive...

Transferrin Genetic Types in Fulani and Yoruba Ecotype of Nigeria Indigenous Chickens

Fulani ecotype chickens (FEC) and Yoruba ecotype chickens (YEC) are the two major types of indigenous chickens in Nigeria. They subsist under traditional Animal husbandry and are thus liable to indiscriminate mating and consequently to loss of genetic diversity. Fulani ecotype chickens (FEC) and Yoruba ecotype chickens (YEC) were investigated to determine genetic variation at transferrin locus ...

The analysis of assortative mating: a LISREL model.

The use of linear models to discriminate between primary and secondary assortative mating has allowed a significant advance in our understanding of the mate selection process. We describe how these methods may be implemented in the LISREL and COSAN packages and illustrate the method with data on cognitive ability, education, and personality reported by Phillips et al. (Behav. Genet. 18:347-356,...
